Herdwick
The Herdwick breed has developed over centuries, possibly from a Scandinavian ancestor, on
the Cumbrian Fells. Perhaps the hardiest of all British breeds, it can survive on the highest ground.
The fleece is black at birth; the brittle, white kempy fibres increase with age, rendering the fleece of the adult grey. The wool is used for
carpets and insulation material.
